Pankaj Singh will start off proceedings for India. Ballance on strike.
Finally, yes finally Cook gets some runs under his belt. Gets to his 36th Test fifty. He pulls one to deep square leg for a couple. A much needed fifty for him.....
Ballance started off the session in a nervy manner as Pankaj Singh beat his outside edge on a couple of occasions but then flicked one to fine leg for a boundary. Cook then got into the groove and pulled one off Shami for a boundary. He then reached his 36th fifty with a pull for a couple.
The ploy of placing the leg slip nearly paid dividends as Ballance nudged one off Pankaj Singh but it fell just short of Jadeja stationed there.
There was a huge appeal for a caught behind against Ballance off Shami as he went for a booming drive. He seemed to miss it but there was a noise as the ball passed the bat. Replays seemed inconclusive.
Ballance then got into an aggressive mold as he cut Mohammad Shami over backward point for a boundary. Cook then placed one wide of the slip cordon for another boundary. England have upped the ante a bit now.
Ballance drove one through mid on off Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a boundary, the pair has stitched together a 50-run stand.
Bhuvneshwar bowls a beauty: Length outside off, Cook comes forward for a prod but is beaten by the away movement.
Jadeja into the attack now.
Width offered by Bhuvneshwar on a couple of occasions. Ballance at first punches it through covers for three and then Cook cuts it through cover-point for three. The Indian bowlers need to up the ante now......
Drinks break. It seems all too easy for Cook and Ballance after lunch. They have now added 71 unbeaten runs. Pankaj Singh has been the one impressive bowler so far for India. The pitch has eased up and looks good for batting. It's gong to be hard work for the Indian bowlers.
Cook takes a risky single and the fielder misses his shy at the non-striker's end. Had that hit, Cook would have been a goner!!!!
Ballance looks to cut but gets a bottom edge into the ground and over the slip cordon for a boundary. He follows it with a lovely flick through mid-wicket for three.
Rohit Sharma is into the attack now.
India need something special from someone, they are really missing Ishant. The lanky bowler conjured a magic spell every time India needed him in the previous Tests.
The 100-stand comes up between Cook and Ballance........
Ballance brings up his 3rd Test fifty with a risky single. He's having a decent series so far. A direct hit at striker's end would have had Cook in trouble.
The ploy of bowling Rohit Sharma isn't working. He drops one short and Ballance cuts it uppishly wide of gully for a boundary.
FOUR! Lovely stroke! Full outside off, Ballance leans forward and drives it through covers for a boundary.
FOUR! England compounding India's woes now. Short outside off, Ballance rocks back and cuts it powerfully through point for another boundary.
FOUR! Poor lines. Pankaj drifts onto the pads, Ballance looks to flick but gets a thin edge just wide of Dhoni for a boundary.
Jadeja to come from round the wicket.
FOUR! Bad delivery to end the over. On the pads, Cook nudges it to fine leg for a boundary.
Shikhar Dhawan into the attack, it's the last over before tea.
Tea Day 1: Another brilliant session for England. They scored 108 runs without losing any wicket. At Tea, ENG- 186/1
India needed a bowler who can conjure a magical spell but that never came. Looks like they are missing Ishant. They desperately need to break this stand!
Right back for the post-tea session........
Jadeja will start off proceedings for India. Ballance on strike.
Mohammad Shami will bowl from the other end.
FOUR! This has been the problem with Shami. He isn't consistent with his lines. Drifts onto the pads, Ballance flicks it to fine leg for a boundary.
The batsmen are finding it pretty easy at the moment.
FOUR! Cook gets into the 90s, Short from Shami and Cook pulls it powerfully through mid-wicket for a boundary.
The 200 comes up for England. Cook 91*, Ballance 77*. It's been all too easy for the pair so far. Eng- 200/1
