The pair have added 70 from 26.1 overs and steadied India just when England seemed they might burst through after taking the big wickets of Pujara and Kohli.
Vijay has been exceptional, holding the innings together, while Rahane has justified his selection ahead of Rohit Sharma by showing enormous patience, something Rohit has rarely shown in his career.
England will be a touch happier after the second session than the first but India will still feel they are in a stronger position. The day can still go either way though.
Cook will be eager to take a couple more wickets before the day ends. If India ends the day only three wickets down, Dhoni will be more than happy.

Plunkett bowls a sharp bouncer that zooms in on Rahane's head. He takes his bottom hand off the bat and that saves him as the ball loops gently in the air and falls just short of silly point. Excellent bouncer and very well played in the end.
OUT! Bizarre dismissal. Rahane goes for the pull but is very early on the shot. The ball takes the toe end of the bat and darts into silly point's stomach. Nobody knows what has happened for a moment but then Rahane walks.

That's the end of a a dogged knock from Rahane and opens the door for England. MS Dhoni comes in at No. 6, where he doesn't like to bat outside of India.

Watching the replay, that was a very good catch from Cook. He kept his eye on the batsman and the ball and was rewarded for it. Rahane might have been unsettled by the bouncer a couple of balls earlier.
Dhoni goes for the pull straight away. All he can manage is an under edge straight down into the ground.
