Vijay lets another ball go through outside offstump. His nickame is the Monk. It seems apt today.

-
Vijay unfurls that gorgeous cover drive but this time he can't pierce the field.

-
Fifty for Dhoni. This one bounces a touch more than Dhoni expected but he is able to guide it through the vacant gully area to bring up a very good half-century.
-
It took Dhoni just 64 balls to get there and he struck only five fours, so he has been a busy batsman.
-
-
Vijay fittingly defends the last ball of the day off the back foot.
-
India end the day on 259 for 4, with Vijay on 122 and Dhoni on 50.
-
The pair have added 81 in the 30 overs they have been together, the biggest partnership of the innings.
-
England had their moments but the day belongs to Vijay and to some extent Dhoni too.
-
This is MS Dhoni's 26th 50+ score as captain in Tests, the most by an Indian captain in the format, beating legendary Gavaskar (25) #EngvInd

Plenty of questions have to be asked about why the pitch is so slow and low. Pace, bounce and some sideways movement was needed.

India will be the happier of the two sides after 90 overs. They haven't run away from England and a couple of wickets would swing the pendulum back to towards the home side but for the moment, India hold the upper hand.
-
If Dhoni and Vijay can extend their partnership on the second morning and push their team towards a total over 350, India will be feeling pretty good.
-
Whether they have the bowlers to knock over England on this pitch remains to be seen though.
-
With nothing on offer for the seam bowlers on this pitch, Binny's medium pace might be less than useful.

Vijay: Stick to the basics and play straight as long as possible. Just work on being patient.
-
Vijay: We lost a couple of wickets. Reverse-swing was happening. Had to consolidate and take my time and build my partnership with MS. It is a good wicket. There was some swing in the morning but it is a good wicket and just have to hang in there.
-
Vijay: We are in a good position if we can get through the first hour tomorrow.

That is it from us tonight. Thanks for following along and join us again tomorrow for what promises to be an intriguing second day.
