Rodgers: Money can't buy what we felt on the way over here on the bus. That is history. That is passion.
Roberto Martinez, the Everton manager, thinks this is Liverpool's biggest test of the season because City has quality up and down their line-up while Liverpool rely more on individual brilliance.
15 mins: Sturridge misses a sitter in front of goal. Sterling breaks down the rest and Sturridge makes a good run between the defenders. But with just Hart to beat he opts to let the ball run on to his left foot and slices it wide.
Yaya Toure is limping. This could be a big blow for City.
Yaya is on his knees. It is apparently a groin problem. City could be a game-changer.
Javi Garcia is now on for Yaya.
Garcia's first part of the action is to pick up a yellow card.
22 mins: City win a corner after a slick passing move involving Silva (who else?)
The corner comes to nothing after Suarez is fouled on the edge of the area.
25 mins: City enjoy a good spell of possession and break into Liverpool's box but Skertel was strong in booting the ball away. Liverpool break through Sterling, who finds Sturridge on the edge of the area and the result is a corner.
SAVE Gerrard has a free header in the center of the box but powers it straight at Hart, who does well to tip it over the bar.
GOAL! Skrtel scores!! Makes the run to the near post and glances the ball past Hart and into the far corner. Anfield erupts! This is amazing stuff.
City are shocked. Liverpool are ascendant.
Can City respond? There is plenty of time left.
City try to find a way through the Liverpool defence but again Skrtel is there and again Liverpool break. Suarez dinks and turns and finds Sturridge but the final ball from him is just a foot away from two Liverpool players. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
City then move the ball up the field. This is end-to-end stuff at the moment.
The attack comes to nothing though.
Silva rolls the ball through to Dzeko with Gerrard in attendance down the right in the box. Gerrard gets the block in and its corner to City.
31 mins: Mignolet comes out and punches the ball clear.
Liverpool come forward again through Suarez and Sterling but Henderson's pass is cut out.
Sterling has been at the center of everything good for Liverpool so far. His movement has terrified City. They keep losing him in the center of the pitch.
36 mins: Liverpool get a corner but it comes to nothing as Kompany intercepts.
37 mins: A long pass from City almost finds Dzeko streaking clear and Johnson is forced to hoof it out in blatant violation of the way Rodgers likes to play.
37 mins: A poor challenge from Coutinho upends Dzeko and City have a free kick right in front of Liverpool's goal just outside the box.
Silva and Nasri stand over it.
Silva tries to slide the ball under the wall but can't and Clichy's cross is gathered by Mignolet. Anfield exhales.
41 mins: Coutinho picks up the ball 35 yards from goal and had Sturridge to his left and Suarez to his right but he opts to shoot as the City defence backs away and makes a right meal of it. Scuffs it wide left and doesn't even trouble Hart.
42 mins: Mignolet gives the ball away to City but Silva doesn't react quickly enough and the chance is gone.
43 mins: City break with speed down the right and Navas is in acres of space down the right. Silva meets his cross with his head but ball goes with with Sakho getting the faintest of touches to concede a corner.
44 mins: Chaos in the Liverpool box as first Sterling and then Johnson save off the line with their heads. Mignolet eventually comes and collects the ball.
45 mins: Snap shot from Fernandinho in the box is superbly saved by Mignolet, who dives full stretch and sticks out his right hand to divert the ball past his right-hand post.
City doing all the running now. Liverpool defending desperately and hanging on for the half-time whistle.
The whistle blows to end a riveting first half. Liverpool have the lead but City are not about to go away. It was only desperate defending that kept them from nicking a goal back.
It was thrilling, exhilarating first half. If the second half lives up it, there will be plenty of breathless fans at the end of this game.
Liverpool had 53% of the possession in that first half.
City no doubt missing Yaya Toure.
Suarez has been a bit subdued in this game though. He hasn't imposed himself yet, though his part in the opening goal was instrumental.
Time for a quick cup of tea before the second half begins
The second half has begun.
48 mins: Liverpool working the ball around it the middle of the park before Sterling skips past a couple of defenders and bears down on goal. Unfortunately for Liverpool, his shot is not of the same quality and goes well wide.
City make a substitution: Navas comes off, Milner comes on.
51 mins: Skrtel makes a last ditch tackle to keep Fernandino from breaking through on goal. The through-ball came via the boot of Milner. Almost an immediate impact.
52 mins: A theatrical dive from Suarez after Dimechelis tries to tackle him. Suarez deserves an Oscar for this as Dimechelis barely touched him though he made no effort to play the ball.
Suarez needs to be careful. He could have been sent off for that and turned this game around completely. He needs to calm down.
55 mins: Silva has the ball in the back of the net but the flag was up as the ball went out of play behind the goal before Milner could drill the cross in.
City slowly imposing themselves on the game here.
That was the EPL at its best. The game lived up to all the pre-match hype. City showed great character to come back after going 2 goals down but perhaps destiny is on Liverpool's side this season.
Now, if you don't mind, I am going to go away and try and calm down by staring at a blank wall for a while. That is enough excitement for a month of Sundays.
